The RUC is questioning a woman in connection with the stabbing of a man outside a pub in east Belfast in the early hours of Monday morning.

The 49-year-old man was stabbed twice in the chest outside the Albert Bar at Albert Bridge Road at around 2 a.m. He later suffered a heart attack and remains in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Detectives have set up an incident room at Willowfield RUC Station.

Following an earlier incident in Newry, police are treating as attempted murder a multiple stabbing in the town on Christmas Eve. A 28-year-old local man received 12 stab wounds to his chest in an attack outside a pub in Stream Street in the town. Detectives in Newry are appealing for witnesses to the assault, which occurred at around 10 p.m.

The injured man was discharged from Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry on New Year's Eve. Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident. Meanwhile, hundreds of mourners lined Shankill Road in west Belfast yesterday for the funeral of Ms Julie-Ann Osbourne (22), who was found with multiple stab wounds in her Shankill Terrace home last Wednesday.

Her boyfriend, Mr Andrew Robinson (22), who lives at the same address, appeared at Belfast Magistrate's Court charged with her murder on Monday. He was remanded in custody for a week.
