Two Polish civilians were kidnapped in Baghdad today but one of them managed to escape. Speaking by telephone from Iraq, a spokesman for the Polish-led multinational division said the two Poles worked for a construction company.
"Unknown assailants kidnapped two Polish workers of a construction company from a flat in Baghdad," the spokesman said, confirming an earlier report by the PAP news agency.
A number of foreigners have been kidnapped in Iraq in recent weeks as part of pressure on the US-led coalition occupying Iraq to pull-out.
A staunch US ally, NATO member Poland leads a multinational force in south-central Iraq and around the holy city of Kerbala. It has deployed around 2,400 troops, one of the largest single contingents in the US-led coalition.
