Both Polish parties forming the next ruling coalition are in favour of adopting the euro, incoming prime minister Donald Tusk said today.
Mr Tusk, whose Civic Platform grouping is in coalition talks with the smaller Peasants' Party, said his government would ensure Poland met euro zone entry criteria.
"Realistically, the euro be adopted by Poland in 2012-13," he said. "My government will do everything for Poland to meet the euro criteria but the final decision will be made after we calculate how it will impact incomes of average people."
Civic Platform defeated the conservative Law and Justice of Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski in elections two weeks ago. The newly elected parliament is holding its first session later today.
Euro zone countries must comply with a series of rules, including keeping borrowing below 3 per cent of GDP.
The economic boom of recent years means Poland is now close to meeting this demand - the only outstanding criterion in the management of its economy.
