A Polish man is to appear in Longford District Court today charged with drink-driving after a crash that claimed the life of another Polish man at the weekend.

As arrangements are made to fly home the body of passenger Jaroslau Debik (19), the driver of the car, Grzegorz Zyrek, will appear before Judge John Neilan.

Mr Zyrek (20) was remanded in custody at a special sitting of Longford District Court on Sunday. Both he and Mr Debik lived at Shannonside, Rooskey, Co Roscommon.

Four males and three females were involved in the crash - six from Poland and one from Portugal - which happened at Battery Road, Longford, just after midnight on Saturday.

One woman is still in hospital 'but she is expected to be released today.

Mr Debik's body is expected to be flown to Poland this week.

Passenger Naolski Czeslau (37), of Lough Ree Park, Lanesborough, Co Longford, was charged with stealing a wallet of a garda as he was driven away from the scene in a patrol car. He has also been remanded in custody to today's district court sitting.
