Speaking on the debate on the Children's Bill, Mr Jim Walsh (FF) raised the case of the 13-year-old girl in care who is pregnant as a result of rape. Mr Walsh said it was reprehensible that some politicians had rushed to the media in a subtle attempt to thwart the will of the people by exploiting what was a terrible personal tragedy for the 13-year-old rape victim and her family.
He said any request made of the Minister for Health should be to have mobilised the agencies of the State to provide the necessary support and assistance for this young girl and her family in the plight in which they found themselves.
