The GAA, together with the FAI and the IRFU, yesterday met Minister for Sport Leo Varadkar to raise the issue of the increase in rateable valuation on the country’s two main sports stadia, Croke Park and the Aviva.

GAA director general Páraic Duffy said the organisations had made their case to the Minister and Minister of State Michael Ring.

The cost to the GAA would rise from €600,000 to more than €2 million, whereas the rugby and soccer associations would have to pay an extra €2m between them.

"From a total of €1m the amount would rise to around €4.5m," he said, "which is effectively a €3.5m tax on sport. We will be appealing the valuation but also
looking for the Government to address the issue.

“The Minister listened to what we had to say and said he would get back to us.”
