Court fines for all road traffic offences amounted to £28.7 million for the five years from 1995, while on-the-spot fines for speeding totalled £16.8 million for the three full years since their introduction in December 1996.
The Minister for Justice, Mr O'Donoghue, in written replies to Mr Denis Naughten (FG, Longford-Roscommon) said there were 57 sergeants and 364 gardai employed full-time on traffic law enforcement duties. Each Garda division had a traffic corps. In the Dublin Metropolitan region there was a traffic unit in each of the six divisions.
