Speaking during a general audience attended by 15,000 people in Saint Peter's Square, the Pope said international treaties and conferences were important tools in the battle for equality and dignity.
"Despite these efforts millions of human beings are waiting for their national rights in the human family to be recognised," said the Pontiff.
"The Church shares the commitment of those who defend human rights and expresses solidarity with those who are victims of discrimination for racial, ethnic, religious and social reasons."
"Religious communities must join actions undertaken by governments and international organizations" to fight racial discrimination, he continued.
The United Nations is to hold a conference against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance in Durban, South Africa, August 31st - September 7th.
