Portsmouth goalkeeper Aaron Flahavan has died after a car crash, the club have announced.

Portsmouth goalkeeper Aaron Flahavan has died after a car crash, the club have announced.

The 25-year-old was involved in the collision last night, although the circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation.

Graham Rix paid tribute to the former trainee and offered his condolences to Flahavan's friends and family. "It's really sad. I feel for his family, he was a really smashing young lad," he told the club's official website, www.pompeyfc.co.uk.

A club statement on their website said: "Everybody at the club is shocked and devastated by the news and our deepest sympathy goes out to his family and partner at this time. Our prayers and thoughts are with them in their grief.

"Many people at the club have watched Aaron grow up and mature into a fine young man and goalkeeper. For now it's hard to take in, but first and foremost our sincere condolences go out to his family."

Flahavan, born in Southampton, joined Portsmouth as a trainee and had not played for any other club.
