Leeds striker Alan Smith scored his first international goal as England drew 1-1 with Portugal in an entertaining friendly at Villa Park today.

Smith, often troubled by disciplinary problems in the past, stooped to direct a bullet header past Vitor Baia after a 40th minute cross from Leeds team-mate and England debutant Lee Bowyer.

Portugal should have drawn level early in the second half when substitute Nuno Gomes twice hit the woodwork with headers.

The visitors eventually found the net 11 minutes from time when Costinha rose highest to head a corner kick past England keeper David James.
