Two Portuguese nationals appeared at a special sitting of Wicklow District Court last night charged with an assault on Mr Matthew Travers in Carnew early yesterday morning.

Mr Bernardino Paulo Ferreria Pereira Araujo (28), was charged with assaulting Mr Travers contrary to Section 2 of the NonFatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Mr Joao Manuel Vaz Da Velga Camoes was charged under Section 3 of the same act. Insp Peter Finn opposed bail for the two.

Their solicitor, Mr David Tarrant, said Mr Araujo had no money but had a job lined up with Kerry Foods. He had been employed in Ireland but had returned to Portugal.

He said Mr Araujo's family might be able to raise some money for bail.

The court heard that Mr Camoes is working with Kerry Foods.

Judge William Hamill remanded the two in custody at Cloverhill Prison to August 27th and ordered that a Portuguese interpreter be present.
