A murder inquiry has opened after a postmortem on a man's body found in Dublin revealed he was  stabbed.

The body of Finbar Dennehy (50) was discovered on Wednesday afternoon in the Merchamp apartment complex on Seafield Road East in Clontarf.

A neighbour who had a key to the man's apartment let himself in when he had not heard from his friend for several days.

The body of Mr Dennehy, who was single and lived alone, was found covered and lying on a couch in the apartment. His hands were tied and a bag was over his head.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis carried out a postmortem last night on the body. It revealed Mr Dennehy died of a single stab wound. It is believed he had been dead for several days and was last seen alive on Saturday night or Sunday morning.

The murder scene has been preserved for examination. Gardaí are examining CCTV footage from the apartment block and are doing house-to-house inquiries.
