Surin, Thailand - Former Khmer Rouge supremo Pol Pot, blamed for presiding over the deaths of nearly two million Cambodians, has died of a heart attack, Khmer Rouge cadres and the Thai military said early this morning.
Senior Khmer Rouge officers contacted in the hills surrounding the rebels' beleaguered stronghold at Anlong Veng told Worldwide Television news that Pol Pot died at 11.15 p.m. yesterday. Senior Thai military officers in this border region confirmed the death, saying they had been informed by Khmer rebels near the frontier early this morning.
