FORMER US secretary of state Colin Powell is expected to use a high-profile television appearance tomorrow to end months of speculation by throwing his support behind Barack Obama.
His decision to go on television just two weeks before the election suggests he has finally made up his mind. Mr Powell, who worked closely with three Republican presidents, said he would decide between Mr Obama and John McCain, a long-time friend, after watching the presidential debates.
His endorsement would be the biggest Mr Obama has secured so far. As a prominent member of President George Bush's administration, he may shift some Republican-leaning voters into the Obama camp.
Democratic strategists are divided on the benefits, however. One suggested that Mr Powell's decision might be seen as being based on racial solidarity, which could alienate some white voters. - ( Guardianservice)
