The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Walton Empey, has warned against people allowing themselves to be carried along by euphoria following the Belfast Agreement.
The success of the referendums was by no means a foregone conclusion. That being the case, there was no room for complacency, he said.
The agreement was complex and demanded to be read carefully. "Furthermore, we in the Republic must not allow ourselves to think that the process is only concerned with Northern Ireland."
There were people, he said, who continued to hate those from whom they differ, and as long as that remained in the hearts of people there would be no peace, at least not in Christian terms.
Dr Empey was speaking last night at a thanksgiving service to mark the restoration of St Michan's Church in Dublin. It was also attended by the President, Mrs McAleese.
