Johannesburg - A South African woman told the story of her love affair in the 1960s with the country's new president, Mr Thabo Mbeki, to a magazine shortly before her death last month, a report said yesterday.
The Sunday Times said the South African edition of Marie Claire magazine will later this week publish Zena Temkin's account of her year-long affair with Mr Mbeki when he was 19 and she 17. They tried to keep the relationship secret because apartheid legislation at the time forbade sex across the colour bar.
It started when both teenagers were working at the underground communist newspaper New Age in Johannesburg and ended when Mr Mbeki fled into exile in 1963.
