London - Both sides in the row over Gen Augusto Pinochet piled the pressure on British Home Secretary, Mr Jack Straw, yesterday as he prepared to decide whether Spanish judges can go ahead with their bid to extradite the ex-dictator on human rights charges.
In what is described as the most difficult decision of his career, Mr Straw must decide by Friday whether to allow extradition proceedings brought by Spanish magistrates against the former Chilean leader to go ahead. Gen Pinochet, currently staying in a rented mansion in Surrey, is due at Bow Street magistrates court in central London on Friday to hear Mr Straw's decision.
