Dubliners are to pay more for on-street residential parking permits under proposals being considered by the city council.
The changes would also see a limit of two permits per household in areas where demand for street parking is "heavy". But residents of multiple-unit apartment blocks will still not be eligible for permits, except on streets where the demand is not deemed heavy.
The basic permit would rise from €25 to €35, while a second permit for the same household would rise from €25 to €100.
Third and fourth permits, also currently €25 each, would rise to €200 and €350 respectively. But these would only be issued to households outside "heavy demand" areas.
Heavy demand occurs where residents' permits account for more than 90 per cent of on-street spaces available.
Residents of flats and apartments in buildings with more than four dwellings would be entitled to permits only outside heavy-demand areas. In such cases, existing permit-holders face the same price increase as other residents - €25 to €35 - but new applicants would have to pay €500 a year.
The city council points out that there has been no price increase since 1986. However, it has begun a consultative process and is seeking comments from individuals and organisations by June 19th. Details are available on the council's website, www.dublincity.ie, or may be viewed at the civic offices in Wood Quay.
