The Prince of Wales has flown into Ireland to be guest of honour at a party for friend in Waterford this weekend.

The Prince of Wales has flown into Ireland to be guest of honour at a party for friend in Waterford this weekend.

The party, a 60th birthday celebration for Lord Hartington, will take place at Lismore Castle tomorrow night.

Lord Hartington is the son of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, who are both expected to attend. The castle is the family's ancestral home.

Prince Charles was accompanied by his partner, Ms Camilla Parker-Bowles when they landed at Cork Airport this evening.

Members of the Garda's Special Detective Unit and Emergency Response Unit were drafted in to assist teams of gardai from throughout the Dungarvan division in providing security for the visit.

Members of the Garda sub aqua team even checked out the River Blackwater, which flows past the castle, as part of the security operation.

Lismore councillor Bernard Leddy described the atmosphere in the town in advance of the Prince's visit as "electric".

"We are all very, very pleased that this visit is taking place," he said.  "It will highlight Lismore as a place to visit and Prince Charles and the entourage will be more than welcome."

Mr Leddy said he was delighted to be invited to the party.

"This is the kind of thing that only happens about once or twice a century in a town like Lismore," he said.  "The people who are going are really, really excited."
