Santiago - Twenty-six prisoners were killed during a riot in a northern Chilean jail early yesterday, after fires set in cells by protesting inmates spread out of control, police reported. The riot at the jail in Iquique, about 1,800 km north of Santiago, continued for around two hours.
A police spokesman in Iquique said: "It is not clear what the motive was, but there was no attempt by prisoners to break out of the prison."
Local media said six other people were hurt.
