A protest march was held in Dun Laoghaire today against a council proposal to build high rise apartments on the sea front.
Plans are being tabled to revamp the derelict baths in Dun Laoghaire and replace the site with a €140 million development.
But around 500 people from the Save our Seafrontcampaign took to the streets to protest against the project.
Socialist Workers Party activist Richard Boyd Barrett said local residents were concerned the development would pave the way for a string of high rise buildings along the scenic route.
"This is an enormous development and it is going to block out the sea views on a huge chunk of the sea front," he said.
"It will destroy the coastal vistas from the East Pier right the way to Sandycove on one of the country's most beautiful stretches of road and it will set a precedent for further high rise developments on the sea front."
It is understood the plan will include 180 apartments, a €30m waterworld centre and a continuous promenade from Dun Laoghaire to the Forty Foot on 5.5 acres of reclaimed land.
Council officials plan to pay for the development by building 180 apartments with shops and cafes at ground-floor level on the site of the baths.
Mr Boyd Barrett claimed the development was a shameful attempt at privatisation.
The county council is due to meet next month to discuss the plan. Following detailed design work an environmental impact statement would be prepared for approval by An Bord Pleanala.
