The Irish Anti War Movement will hold a protest outside the US embassy this evening over President Bush's deployment
of more
US troops in Iraq.
The campaign said: "The Irish Anti War Movement condemns the announcement by US President George Bush of the deployment of an extra 21,500 US troops to Iraq as well as his airstrikes against Somalia and his increased threats against Iran and Syria.
"Bush claims this is a last "surge" to prevent civil war. But the results will be more devastation as seen in Fallujah a year ago. Indeed it appears that the poor neighbourhood of Sadr City is being lined up for a Fallujah type assault."
Yesterday the UN announced that the civilian death toll in Iraq last year was 34,452.
The Irish Anti War Movement said: "This appalling number is likely to be a considerable underestimation when compared to the peer reviewed survey published in The Lancetwhich estimated 650,000 civilians having died as a result of the invasion and occupation since 2003."
