Some 30 members of the homeless community slept outside Dáil Éireann last night in protest over what they say is Government inaction on the housing crisis.

Mark Grehan, of organisers Street Smart, said they had arranged last night's sleep-out to welcome politicians back from their holidays this morning.

"This action is being taken to send a clear signal to the Government . . . This Government can no longer ignore this issue as we will bring it to their doorsteps. Failure to act will result in more deaths on our streets, deaths caused by the indifference of our Government," he said.

Outside the Dáil last night, Chris Meehan (39), from Dublin, said he had been homeless since the age of 15.

"I live on Sandymount beach and Dart station. The Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council told me recently that I will be 10 to 15 years waiting for a house because I just returned from England . . . I want a place to call my own, to sleep at night without fear of being attacked."

The demonstration follows the death of three people sleeping rough in Dublin three weeks ago.
