Fourteen people charged during an anti-globalisation protest appeared in Dublin District Court yesterday. The 11 men and three women were charged with behaviour likely to cause a breach of the peace outside the Burlington Hotel, Dublin, on Wednesday.
They were arrested following a protest outside the hotel where a conference about public/private partnership was being held.
The 14, all in their 20s and early 30s, were: Mr Thomas Kador, Ms Aoife Ni Fhearghaill, Ms Grace Lally, Ms Marie Clifford, Mr Eoghan Rice, Mr Eoin Fullam, Mr Jamie Murphy, Mr David Lordon , Mr Conor McLoughlin, Mr Graham Scobie, Mr Eoin Timmons, Mr Rory Ahern, Mr Brian Whelan and Mr Richard Boyd Barrett.
All except Mr Ahern had nothing to say after they were charged. Mr Ahern said: "I didn't do anything. I was engaging in a peaceful protest."
Judge Miriam Malone remanded them in custody for a week to Cloverhill District Court with consent to their own bail of £150 each. She also made it a condition of the bail that they stay away from the Burlington area.
She granted free legal aid for 12 of them after hearing three, Mr Rice, Mr Fullam and Mr Timmons, were students and the other nine were unemployed.
