Extra gardaí will be deployed around Shannon Airport tomorrow in an effort to prevent disruption from an anti-war protest blockade.
The Irish Anti-War Movement (IAWM) say several hundred protesters are due to demonstrate against the occupation of Iraq and the continued use of Shannon by the US military.
Chairman of IAWM, Mr Richard Boyd Barrett said the blockade would be peaceful and that protesters "will act according to established guidelines of peaceful civil disobedience.
"This blockade is necessary because our Government insists on the transformation of a civilian airport into a US military base," Mr Boyd Barrett said, accusing the Government of "complicity . . . in the brutal repression of the Iraqi people".
Buses from Dublin, Cork, Galway and Waterford have been organised to transport people to Co Clare for the demonstration, which begins with a gathering in Shannon town centre at 2 p.m. before a march to the airport.
The Garda have refused to comment on how may officers will be deployed, but it is expected barriers will be erected around a mile from the airport terminal in order to prevent disruption to flights.
He said emergency vehicles would be allowed pass the blockade but warned those using the airport to expect disruption.
