A number of people who were forced to evacuate their homes in Derry yesterday after a loud explosion was heard in the city were allowed to return this evening.

The PSNI said it was examining the possibility that it was a failed dissident attack on police. There have been no reports of any injuries.

A number of homes in the Spencer Road and Fountain Hill area of the city were evacuated as a result of the possible blast, but at lunchtime yesterday residents were permitted go back to their properties.

A number of windows were broken as a result of the explosion which was heard all over Derry and as far away as the City of Derry airport, some 10 kilometres away.

Police said the seat of the possible explosion at Quarry Steps would remain sealed off as the investigation continued.
