PSNI detectives today launched a new investigation into the murder of a man whosebody was found in a lake 29 years ago.
Police in Derry today confirmed that they were mounting a freshinvestigation into the death of Mr Patrick Joseph Kelly, a nationalist councillorin County Tyrone.
The body of Mr Kelly, 33, was found in Lough Eyes near Lisbellaw, CoFermanagh. He had been shot a number of times.
Mr Kelly disappeared after locking up a bar in the village of Trillick, CoTyrone, on July 24th, 1974.
Police had been under intense pressure to launch a fresh investigation amidclaims of collusion between the killers and the security forces in the murder.
Mr Kelly's brother, Peter, a Sinn Fein councillor said: "Personally speaking, and as the party I represent, I would prefer to have an independent probe headed by a person fromoutside the country. We don't have much faith in the Royal Ulster Constabulary or the Police Service of Northern Ireland."
He said his family believed there was security force collusion in the murder and he described the original police investigation as a charade. "It was not investigated properly when it should have been 29 years ago," he said.
"The family will be seeking legal advice in the coming days to decide whetherto cooperate with this new investigation or not."
