The officer was manning a checkpoint on the Doagh Road, Newtownabbey, Co Antrim early this morning when the incident happened.

Police say the driver of a dark blue car deliberately swerved towards and hit the officer before speeding off. It was found crashed in Rathcoole later. A number of men were seen running from the car.

The police man is in hospital suffering from a back injury, a fractured hand and bruising.
