A serving police officer has been arrested in Northern Ireland and questioned about the illegal possession of guns, it was confirmed today.
He has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland said a number of firearms were recovered following a search of premises in Aghadowey, outside Coleraine, Co Derry, last Saturday.
They said a man in his late 20s was arrested in connection with the possession of a number of unlicensed guns.
In a follow-up search on Tuesday, an inspection was carried out at a gun shop in the village of Portglenone in Co Antrim, said the PSNI, and a number of firearms taken away for examination.
It is understood the officer only left the PSNI training college and joined the force last year.
Police do not believe the issue to be terrorist-related.
