Police in Northern Ireland today recorded their first victory over the Garda during a competitive GAA stand-off in Dublin.

The PSNI won by 15 points to eight during the annual Thomas McCarthy Cup game. This is the first time the PSNI have clinched victory after four previous defeats, and Deputy Chief Constable Paul Leighton said it was a credit to his officers.

"This has been a great result for our GAA footballers, it's just reward for the time and effort they gave. It is our first victory over An Garda Siochana and it is a historic one."

Police chiefs hope to enter a team in a competitive Northern Ireland league soon after a series of encouraging results in lower leagues.
