The chief executive of German sports goods firm Puma said in a television interview he did not think a competing offer was likely after French luxury goods maker PPR bid €5.3 billion for the company.

"There is always the chance," Jochen Zeitz told German television channel ZDF today. "We consider that possibility relatively remote, a rather hypothetical assumption."

Puma competitor Nike has so far declined to comment on a possible counterbid. The German company said Tuesday it had not been approached by Nike.

Puma expects the bid of 330 euros a share to be PPR's final offer, though that also "remains to be seen", Zeitz said in the television interview.
