Queen's University Belfast is to honour the acclaimed playwright Brian Friel by re-naming its theatre and research centre after him.
The Brian Friel Theatre and Centre for Theatre Research will include facilities for performing arts students attending the University.
Professor David Johnston, head of the School of Languages, Literature and Performing Arts at Queen's, said the centre was "a fitting tribute" to the playwright who has become internationally known for plays such as
Translations, Philadelphia Here I come,and
Dancing at Lughnasa.
Mr Friel, who is an honorary graduate of the university, said he was delighted to receive the honour from Queen's.
"For the last ten years, Queen's has successfully prepared students for careers in theatre and the performing arts. I hope the Brian Friel Theatre and Centre for Theatre Research will enhance the already excellent facilities available to Drama Studies students at Queen's, and help nurture their talent and develop the skills necessary to succeed on the stage and screen," he said.
