The Labour leader, Mr Ruairi Quinn, has written to independent TDs who support the Government, to seek their support against Government proposals to increase the amount of money that can legally be spent in elections by up to 50 per cent. Mr Quinn said the independents were among the real losers from this proposal. His party, he said, would continue to campaign vigorously against the proposal which "flew in the face of the only lessons to be learnt from the tribunals of recent years". `This proposal is solely designed to increase the amount of money Fianna Fail can spend in this general election from £2 million to £3 million," he said.
