A lucky Cork man quit work yesterday to pick up a cheque for a lottery win worth more than €1 million.

A lucky Cork man quit work yesterday to pick up a cheque for a lottery win worth more than €1 million.

The millionaire grandfather, who wants to keep his identity a secret, asked for time off work in order to make the trip to Dublin with his wife to claim his winnings.

His employer refused and the man quit his job to collect his €1.35 million winnings.

"I asked my boss for a day off to come up to Dublin to collect my prize. However, I could not tell him why I wanted the day off as I did not want to divulge that I had won the Lotto and he refused my request.

"So I told him I was quitting and I just left."

The couple, in their 40s, said they would spend the money on houses for their grown-up family. A holiday home could also be on the cards.- PA
