How do you raise £10,000 for the lifeboats in one night? Ask Ms Mary McInerney and Capt Brian Sheridan, organisers of the first National Maritime Quiz which was held in Galway a fortnight ago, with participating teams from around the coastline.
Winners were representatives of the Marine Institute in Galway, and they were presented with the inaugural Commander Bill King Perpetual Trophy, presented by Ms Leonie King on her father's behalf. Commander King, who stayed for much of the night in the Galway Bay Hotel, is the only surviving submarine commander from the second World War and sailed around the world single-handedly, 30 years ago. The quiz is due to be held every two years at various locations, but the consensus is that Galway will be a very hard act to follow.
Also delighted about another £10,000 cheque are members of the Leukaemia Trust, who are supporting a cancer and leukaemia treatment centre for the west of Ireland. The sum was raised at a fundraising fashion show in the Corrib Great Southern Hotel, Galway, this month.
