The independent Limerick radio station which lost its licence ceased broadcasting on 95 FM at midnight on Thursday. The signal, however, is still available via the Astra satellite.
The station lost its licence for alleged breaches of the Independent Radio and Television Commission regulations but the chief executive, Mr Ger Madden, said the station would continue to broadcast on the Astra satellite, which is a European service.
The company has applied to the Department of Communications for the right to rebroadcast its radio service.
Before the station went off 95 FM on Thursday night, it told listeners its signal could be picked up on 99 FM and other frequencies. The station also claims there are community deflector groups in west Limerick, east Limerick and the city re-broadcasting the station from the Astra satellite.
The IRTC has claimed that anyone re-broadcasting Limerick 95 FM on FM or medium-wave would be in breach of the 1988 Broadcasting Act.
Meanwhile, the new station, which obtained a IRTC licence, Limerick 2000, is looking for premises and has started talks with the IRTC. A consortium, headed by Mr P.J. O'Riordan of the Cranberries pop group management team, is investing over £500,000 initially, with a further £250,000 available.
