Gardaí in Co Tipperary are investigating an incident in which a number of shots were fired at a car in Cashel early yesterday.

The shots were fired at the car as it travelled along the Dublin Road into Cashel from the Dublin bypass at approximately 4.30am.

A group of four or five masked men are understood to have been involved in a raid at the Costcutters supermarket on Lower Gate Square, Cashel, shortly after 4am.

It is believed that the raiders followed a man after he attempted to take the vehicle registration number of their car while it was parked outside the supermarket.

Two shots were discharged into the back of the man's car, it emerged.

The eyewitness, who saw the alleged assailants with hammers and other implements, described one of the weapons as a rifle.

The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, made his way to Tipperary town, it is understood, where he raised the alarm.
