Raiders have stolen what gardaí said was a "substantial" amount of cash from a security van in south Dublin this morning.
Two men approached the van as a crew member got out at the EBS in Rathfarnham shopping centre at 8.30 p.m. One of the men was armed with a sawn-off shotgun.
They assaulted the security guard, forced him to the ground and took a number of cash boxes. They left in a Ford Focus car that was later found abandoned at Springfield Crescent, Rathfarnham.
No shots were fired during the raid, but the security man was taken to St James's Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
On Wednesday, the gardaí were called on to step up their efforts to crack down security van raiders.
Speaking after a spate of incidents, the Labour party's spokesman on justice, Mr Joe Costello, said "sooner or later" a security guard or member of the public is going to be killed.
"The Minister for Justice has continually promised action to deal with these gangs, but, as with the 2000 extra gardaí, we have not seen a single legislative or policing initiative to put the gangs out of business and their leaders behind bars," Mr Costello added.
Mr Costello was speaking after more than €500,000 was taken in a robbery from an ATM delivery on Monday in Bettystown, Co Meath. A Dublin gang is suspected of being behind the raid.
During the incident one of the security staff was held at gunpoint and two of the three gang members fired a number of shots from two sawn-off shotguns before they escaped with over €500,000.
An estimated €80,000 was taken in a similar raid at a supermarket in Drogheda last month.
