Rangers chairman David Murray has confirmed that the Ibrox club have made an enquiry about Sunderland midfielder Don Hutchison.
Weekend reports suggested that Old Firm rivals Celtic were set to lure the highly-rated Scotland international to Parkhead.
But Rangers manager Dick Advocaat could be set to make his second signing in the space of a week after securing the signature of defender Michael Ball from Everton.
Hutchison joined Sunderland last summer in a Stg£2.5million move from Everton but has indicated that he could leave the Stadium of Light after just one year.
The attacking midfielder has also been linked with a return to former club West Ham but Rangers' interest could now tempt him to move north instead.
Murray said: "We have made an enquiry and unfortunately it has been blown out of proportion - I have nothing more to say just now."
