RACEHORSE TRAINER John Oxx and science writer Dick Ahlstrom have followed in the footsteps of Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney by being awarded honorary life membership of the Royal Dublin Society (RDS).

Ahlstrom, the Irish Timesscience editor, and Oxx, trainer of Sea The Stars – which made racing history last year by winning six consecutive Group One races – were singled out for their significant contribution to Ireland and Irish life.

RDS president Dr Tony Scott said both men were worthy recipients of the award, which recognised people of distinction in the areas covered by the RDS’s activities – agriculture, arts, industry and science.
