Nairobi - An MP in Kenya's ruling party was shot dead yesterday. Mr Tony Ndilinge was shot twice in the head by unknown assailants just after 5 a.m. while parking his car outside a bar in Nairobi.
There were 20,000 Kenyan shillings ($250) on the body but his car was taken.
Mr Ndilinge (47) was once a prominent KANU rebel, and his criticism of the government cost him his assistant minister's job in 1999.
Recently, however, he had reaffirmed his allegiance to President Daniel Arap Moi and campaigned for KANU in last weekend's by-election. The murder was a reminder of the death of foreign minister Mr Robert Ouko in 1990. This week, Mr Moi and senior cabinet minister Mr Nicholas Biwott filed a libel lawsuit against former US ambassador Mr Smith Hempstone for writing a book alleging they murdered Mr Ouko.
