A man confined to a wheelchair after a road accident more than seven years ago was today awarded record damages of more than £2.4 million in the High Court.
The award was made to Mr Brendan McEnaney (28) against Monaghan County Council for negligence.
Mr McEnaney, from Castleblayney, Co Monaghan is not expected to walk again because of the accident in February, 1994, which was caused when his car skidded on black ice.
The court found the council negligent for failing to remove surface water from the section of the road involved before it froze over.
Mr Justice Philip O'Sullivan initially set damages of more than £3.5 million, but because of Mr McEnaney's speed and the fact that he was not wearing seatbelts, found that the driver had partly contributed to the accident.
