The National 1798 Rebellion Centre is recruiting people to participate in the first ever re-enactment of of the Battle of Vinegar Hill in Co Wexford, to take place on Sunday.
More than 10,000 crown forces attacked a force of more than 20,000 United Irishmen and their followers at their camp on Vinegar Hill overlooking Enniscorthy on June 21st, 1798, with victory going to the better-armed British troops under the command of General Lake.
The battle is to be re-enacted this weekend with visitors and volunteers being given the opportunity to experience life as an 18th-century redcoat at Enniscorthy Castle or to learn about the pikemen of Wexford at the National 1798 Rebellion Centre in Enniscorthy.
On Sunday, the rebels and redcoats will march out of Enniscorthy separately only to meet again on the battlefield under Vinegar Hill. For further information, see visitwexford.ie.
