The Irish Red Cross published a handbook in Dublin today, to support the people it called the "unsung heroes of Ireland".

Helping You to Carewas written for more 150,000 Irish people who care for ill or elderly relatives on their own.

Chairman of the Irish Red Cross David Andrews said the handbook represented a milestone in the history of the Irish Red Cross, a charity recognised for giving humanitarian aid.

"While some have chosen to work as a carer on a professional basis, there are thousands of people who suddenly become carers when a relative or friend falls ill or has an accident.

"These are the unsung heroes of Ireland as they quietly go about their business in a professional, loving and responsible way. We in the Irish Red Cross believe that there is a need to help these people," he said.

The book deals with issues such as adapting the home for a patient, communicating effectively, and looking after a patient's hygiene, bed comfort and personal care.

The document, produced by voluntary members of the Community Services sub-group, also includes advice from professionals.

Mr Andrews said the handbook "highlights the essence of what the Red Cross movement is about - practical, effective and essential assistance for those in need".

President Mary McAleese said the book would make a major contribution towards helping carers.

The Helping You to Care handbook costs €14.99 and is available from the Irish Red Cross at lo-call 1850 650 651. It will also be available in bookshops.
