The small currach fisherman has been caught by EU conservation regulations in a move which a Connacht-Ulster MEP, Mr Sean Ó Neachtain, has described as "bureaucracy gone mad".
It has been confirmed that a 50 per cent grant paid by Údarás na Gaeltachta towards building the vessels has to be discontinued under EU rules on fishery management.
The Connacht-Ulster MEP said that the grant was part of an initiative to support people in small coastal communities and maintain the tradition of building the canvas and wood craft. He pledged to try and have the regulations "rowed back".
