Mr James Gogarty's suggestion that a "corrupt payment" was given to Mr George Redmond by Mr Joseph Murphy jnr at a meeting in June 1989 was a "most unlikely, bizarre and incredible scenario," the tribunal heard.

Mr Garrett Cooney SC, for the Murphy Group, said Mr Gogarty gave evidence that a payment was handed to Mr Redmond at a meeting attended by Mr Murphy jnr, Mr Gogarty, Mr Frank Reynolds and Mr Michael Bailey, at the Clontarf Castle hotel in Dublin.

He said this meeting with Mr Murphy jnr could not have taken place because the first time Mr Redmond "laid eyes" on Mr Murphy jnr was when the tribunal's public sessions began.

Mr Cooney was speaking during the cross-examination of Mr Redmond, the former assistant Dublin city and county manager.

"No meeting of the sort as Mr Gogarty describes as having taken place in June 1989 in Clontarf Castle actually took place. Isn't that right?" asked Mr Cooney.

Mr Cooney said: "You, I think, have told this tribunal that you never laid eyes on Mr Joseph Murphy jnr until the commencement of the public hearings of this tribunal back in January last, isn't that right?" "Yes, that is the position," replied Mr Redmond. When asked if he ever had any contact with Mr Murphy snr, Mr Redmond said he had not.

Mr Cooney said another allegation Mr Gogarty made was that Mr Redmond was paid £10,000 by the Murphy Group for "sticking his neck out" over the demolition of the listed building, Turvey House, in north Co Dublin.

However, he said Mr Redmond only became involved in the issue after it was demolished and a public row broke out.

Mr Cooney said there was evidence available to the tribunal to establish this beyond any doubt.
