Former assistant Dublin City and County manager Mr George Redmond (80) has today been awarded costs for his successful appeal against his conviction for corruption.

Mr Redmond had the 2003 conviction quashed this week after the court of criminal appeal ruled that bank records rendered the conviction "unsafe and unsatisfactory".

He applied today for the costs of both the original trial and the appeal but was refused the costs of the trial.  His lawyers sought €70,000 for the appeal.

The former planning official was accused of accepting a IR£10,000 bribe from garage owner Mr Brendan Fassnidge in relation to the sale of a right of way.

Although Mr Fassnidge, as the key witness, claimed he had withdrawn the money in cash from his account in March 1988, the bank records showed no proof of this.
