Tehran - Reformist members of Iran's parliament said yesterday they would try to reach a compromise on liberalising press laws after the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stepped in to block a reform bill.
The pro-reform majority in parliament had scheduled a debate and vote on Sunday on amendments to the existing law, passed by the previous, conservative legislature.
But they were forced to shelve the bill after a dramatic last-minute intervention by Ayatollah Khamenei, who has the final say in all matters of state.
