The Limerick County Courthouse was re-opened today following an 18-month period at of refurbishment a cost of €10 million.
The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr McDowell, re-opened the courthouse at a ceremony that was attended by representatives of the legal profession and court-user groups.
The original roof-line - removed in the 1950's has been restored, enabling an extra floor of accommodation to be provided. This space houses the offices of the County Registrar and his staff.
Three Courtrooms have been provided including a Family Law Court with consultation and waiting facilities. Three judge's chambers, two jury rooms, legal practitioners and consultation rooms are also provided.
Universal access is a priority throughout the Courthouse as is the provision of signage in Braille and a loop induction system to allow users of hearing aids access the sound amplification system.
Holding cells with direct access for prisoners into court were also being built into the refurbishment providing extra security, privacy and dignity for those involved in cases.
Since the establishment of the Courts Service a total of 25 courthouses have been refurbished.
In total the Courts Service have invested over €100 million in court buildings since 1999, which has seen improvements to almost 100 court venues and offices.
