Concern over fate of east-west road

Councillors from the six Border counties have pledged to fight any attempt to shelve the east-west link road between Dundalk and Sligo.

At a meeting in Dundalk they decided to ask the Minister for the Environment, Mr Cullen, for clarification on the status of the road, the route of which has already been confirmed by consultants retained by the National Roads Authority.

Their concerns were raised by a report in The Irish Times two weeks ago that the road had been shelved until the economy improved.

However, Mr Andrew Boylan, a Cavan-Monaghan TD, said Mr Cullen had not given him any indication of such a decision when they discussed the issue within the past 10 days.

Soccer club in fund-raising drive

Eircom League first division champions Waterford United have launched a fund-raising drive.

The minimum cost of running a club in the premier division is estimated at €600,000 per season, and the board of Waterford United is anxious to ensure the club is on a sound financial footing before the new season begins in April.

"We were obviously all thrilled to secure promotion to the premier division and to have won the first division with five points to spare," said the club chairman, Mr Ger O'Brien.

"However, it is vital that we now build on last season's glory and lay sound foundations for a successful and stable future at what is a great club in a city with a fantastic soccer heritage."

To facilitate contributions, Waterford United have set up a scheme through which they are asking those with an interest in the club's future to donate €21.67 per month by standing order.
